When you are in the market for a new dog, it is likely that you will visit your local pet store and find yourself overwhelmed by all of the choices before you. There seems to be an endless selection of breeds, marked with names like “teacup poodle” or “miniature schnauzer.” To combat this confusion, here’s a list of the small breeds and how big they will get once they are fully grown.

Miniature Dachshund

When full-grown, miniature dachshund can weigh anywhere from 9 to 18 pounds. They stand up to about 10 inches high at the shoulder.

Pomeranian

These furballs can grow up to 10 inches high at the shoulder, and they can live up to 12 years. They typically weigh between 4-7 pounds when fully grown.

Miniature Poodle

Poodles stand around 8-11 inches tall, weighing 7-14 pounds. They have a maximum lifespan of 15 years!

Chihuahua

Nicknamed the “king of toys,” this breed can stand up to 6-9 inches tall, weighing between 2-6 pounds. They are only supposed to live for about 15 years.

Papillon

The Papillon’s full-grown height is 8 inches, and they weigh in around 7-13 pounds. They have a maximum lifespan of 15 years as well.

Toy Poodle

This breed has a weight range of 4-7 pounds with a height of 8 inches tall. Although Toy Poodles are the smallest in size, they have one of the longest average lifespans at around 15 years!

Shih Tzu

With an average full-grown height of 11 inches and weighing around 13-20 pounds, the Shih Tzu is one of the larger toy breeds. They also can live up to 15 years.

Pekingese

The Pekingese stands 10-12 inches tall. The breed has a more petite build than most dogs, with a maximum weight of 20 pounds. The life expectancy for Pekingese is expected to be around 15 years as well.

Italian Greyhound

The smallest of the sighthounds, this breed can stand up to 14-17 inches tall and weigh between 8 and 18 pounds. They also should live for about 15 years.

Toy Fox Terrier

This terrier stands about 12-15 inches tall and weighs between 4-7 pounds. They have a maximum lifespan of 15 years as well.

Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkies typically reach 7-8 inches in height, with an average weight of 6-8 pounds. Although it is one of the tiniest breeds, this pooch has a maximum lifespan of 15 years.

Affenpinscher

This terrier can stand up to 9 inches tall and weigh between 7 and 13 pounds. They have a maximum lifespan of about 15 years as well.

English Toy Spaniel

This breed has an average height of 8-9 inches, with the smallest of the toy spaniels weighing in around 3-6 pounds. They should live up to about 15 years.

English Toy Terrier

The smallest of the toy terriers, the English Toy Terrier stands 8 inches tall and weighs between 4-7 pounds. The life expectancy for this breed is around 15 years as well.

Affen Terrier

This terrier stands 11-13 inches tall and weighs between 7-14 pounds. They have a maximum lifespan of about 15 years as well.
